Former Lyon player, Ferland Mendy became Real Madrid’s latest summer signing yesterday after he joined the Blancos in a transfer deal worth €48 million.

After an underwhelming performance in both the La Liga and Champions League in the 2018-19 season, Madrid president Florentino Perez has spent a lot of money to bolder the squad. His latest addition is French full-back, Ferland Mendy.

Here are a few things to know about the latest Madrid player.

1. He is of Senegalese Descent

Ferland Mandy was born in France on 8 June 1995 to Senegalese parents. He has been called up to play for the French national side on three occasions, but could still play for Senegal.

2. Began His Career at Le Havre

Mandy’s professional football career began in 2015 when he played at Le Havre, a Ligue 2 club. The same club has produced top players such as Paul Pogba, Lassana Diarra and Riyad Mahrez. Ferland Mandy was an integral player of the squad back then and made 47 appearances.

3. Time at Lyon

Mendy signed for Lyon on June 2017 on a five-year contract. While in Lyon, the 24-year-old emerged as an important figure for Bruno Genesio’s side. His was instrumental to their round of 16 finishes in the 2018/2019 Champions League finish. He finished the season with 3 goals and 2 assists in 46 matches.

4. Good with both feets

Although primarily a left back, Mendy is good with both his left and right legs. When interviewed by a reporter, he spoke about his versatility. Mendy stated that he learned how to use his right foot at a young age.

5. Long-term successor to Marcelo

Real Madrid always had a knack for producing world-class left-backs.

Ferland Mendy is seen as a long-term replacement for Real Madrid legend Marcelo. Marcelo is said to be one of the best attacking full-backs in football. Ferland Mendy would be a suitable replacement him because he is also very attack-minded.
