He attracted a host of big clubs after performing exceedingly well in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
With a lot of elite clubs fighting for his signature, here are five things to know about Bruno Fernandes.
1. Named Player of the Year in the Portuguese league
Bruno Fernandes signed for Sporting CP in 2017/18 season. In his first season at the club, he made an outstanding debut, and at the end of the season, he has already scored 16 goals. When the season ended he named the Portuguese League’s Player of the Year in 2018.
2. Key Player for the Portuguese National Team
Bruno Fernandes is already a key player in the Portuguese men’s national team. He made his international debut on November 2017 and was called up for the FIFA World Cup in 2018. He also played a major role in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph in 2019.
3. Has a contract of 100 million euros but may be signed for less
A release clause for a player is termed to be how much the club is willing to pay for that player. In Bruno Fernandes’ case, 100 million euros is his release clause, but the money required to sign him is expected to be much less. There have been reports about negotiations from Manchester United and the Portuguese side of a bid of half the price for his signature. Clubs like Juventus, Chelsea and Liverpool are still checking out the player, so Manchester United is not in the clear yet.
4. Broke a Record as the Highest Scoring Midfielder
Bruno Fernandes has put in his best this season for Sporting CP and scored a lot of goals. He has penned down his name in Sporting CP’s history after his 23rd competitive goal in the league. This means that he has surpassed Antonio Oliveira’s club record of the highest scoring midfielder in a single season since the 1981/1982 season.
5. Cancelled his Contract after Violence but later Rejoined
Bruno Fernandes and his teammates were attacked by so-called fans at the club’s training ground. This is one of the most horrifying scenes in recent football history. Players were subjected to violence by their supporters last summer because they were unable to qualify for Champions league. This incident left most of the players in shock, and their future is indefensible. The Portuguese initially terminated his contract but was convinced to rejoin after club president Bruno de Carvalho’s decision to leave as a result of the incident.
