It was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match after he was announced and handed a three year contract as the new Manchester United coach, but yet the results weren’t as impressive when compared to his first match as care-taker of the Red Devils.

Here we look at what caused the defeat with some brief details and explanations.

THE RED DEVILS MADE TOO MANY MISTAKES

In every football match, luck plays a slight role in determining the results but last night, United literally gifted the win to Wolves by not playing up to their usual standards.  As a matter of fact, United created too many mistakes that they even have an own goal to show off for that.  Romelu Lukaku himself was guilty of squandering quite a number of golden chances in the match, and Paul Pogba was not at his best that night.

RUI PATRICIO WAS ON FORM

Wolves goalkeeper was a force between the post against United. He gave his side plenty of confidence by showing safe hands as United pushed for goals.  In the 13th minute, he was unfortunate for not being able to stop the rebound shot by Scott McTominay despite initially being able to push away Lukaku’s close range shot.  At the end of the other pitch, United’s David De Gea wasn’t having a great day with many saying he could have done more to save the game

SOLSKJAER’S TACTICAL CHANGE DIDN’T GO AS PLANNED

Solskjaer changed his usual game plan against Wolves and it back-fired. He changed his formation by asking Young to play as part of the three-man defense and even made six changes to adapt to the new formation.  While the formation seemed to have worked in the first quarter of the match, United soon found themselves unable to dictate the midfield with Fred and Smalling allowing too much room for Diogo Jota to exploit.
