John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are two of the greatest defenders to ever come out of England. Both of them captained the Three Lions, and both had distinguished international careers. When mentioning the greatest English defenders of all time, the names of these two players will always pop-up. However, who was a better player between John Terry and Rio Ferdinand?

Let’s find out.

Who was a Better Player Between John Terry and Rio Ferdinand?

Rio Ferdinand and John Terry were both fantastic players. They were also two very different players. I will rate their performance on some factors.

1. Trophies Won

Both players played for the two most successful English clubs sides in the last two decades. The duo won pretty much everything both domestic and European.

But Ferdinand does have the edge when it comes to Premier League titles. He won six top-flight medals compared to Terry’s three. Both have also won Europe’s premier club competition once as well. John Terry has also won five FA Cup titles while Ferdinand has won none. Terry also won the Europa Cup once.

2. Leadership qualities

Both of them are two natural born leaders, having captained both clubs and countries at some point. However, I believe that Terry was the more natural leader for his club as well as England. He has been leading the West London club since the 2003-04 season, and successfully showed his important leadership qualities on the pitch.

3. Playing Ability

Both Terry and Rio Ferdinand had two different playing styles. Rio Ferdinand played as a sweeper and possessed the ability to move the ball from the defense with his feet and then starting attacks with accurate passes to his teammates. He was also a solid defender and was very aggressive.

John Terry, on the other hand, was an old-school, no-nonsense, bullish central defender. He scored more goals than Ferdinand and was equally great at passing.

So who was a better player between the two? For me, it was John Terry. But, who do you think it was?
