James Forrest says it would be foolish for anyone to begin writing off Celtic skipper Scott Brown.

The Hoops captain has been troubled by injuries this season and fell below his own high standards as Celtic were beaten by Rangers at Ibrox last month – their first Glasgow derby league loss in six years.

Brown, now 33, has been touted for a move to Australia’s A-League next summer but Forrest has cautioned against writing off a man he believes may still be the fittest in the Celtic squad.

“Everyone has their opinions about Scott but inside the club, the players and staff know how influential he is on and off the park,” said the winger.

“Right since I came through he has always been the same and even now he could well be the fittest he has ever been. It’s incredible how long he has done it and he still has a few years left in him.

“Broony has always been in and about the place every day. I think he likes players first and foremost, especially those who work hard and give it everything.”

At 27, Forrest has won 15 major domestic honours with Celtic and made more than 300 appearances. Should Brown call time on his career in Glasgow, Forrest would inherit the mantle of most experienced player in Brendan Rodgers’ squad. He is content to wait another while before inheriting that mantle.

“For me, he has always been the captain, the main man, and if he did leave for me it definitely would be strange. He’s great with young boys and new signings as well. He’s invaluable I would say,” Forrest added.

“The manager has come out and said he’s earned the respect to make his mind up. It’s a big decision and one he’s not going to make overnight. Whatever he does everyone will back him.”

Celtic are 1.20 to win their eighth successive Scottish Premiership title this season, with city rivals Rangers now 4.33 after their Old Firm success.
