Marcelo

The mercurial Brazilian left back held a first-team spot for Real Madrid for many years and was the best in his position for half a decade.

However, Marcelo is now out of form and no longer makes the starting XI at Real Madrid.

After winning three consecutive Champions League titles, Real Madrid lost their coach, Zidane, and superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo. A lot of people expected Madrid to suffer a bit, but no one expected that Marcelo, arguably the most consistent and outstanding left-back of the last decade, would turn out to be out of form and out of favor at Madrid. How did Marcelo become a flop at Madrid?

First of all, Marcelo had recurrent injury problems this season. This season he has suffered from three significant injuries. He had suffered a hamstring Injury, torn muscle bundle, and muscle strain. Those injuries have impacted on his performance this season.

Second, Marcelo had issues with his weight. Marcelo is one of such players who easily put on weight. This typically occurs when you are out injured and don’t train. Former Real Madrid coach, Bernd Schuster explained to AS. “Some players are built that way, and I know that Marcelo is one of them; he puts on weight with ease, and so he needs to be very careful – especially if he gets injured.”

Third, Marcelo seems to have suffered a loss of motivation. A player who always competes at the top level will always feel motivated to win. That is not evident with Marcelo; he seems to lack the drive to win trophies and look tired at Real Madrid. Juventus have made their interest in the Brazilian known, and this could be one of the reasons why he isn’t himself at Real Madrid.

Lastly, the emergence of Sergio Reguilon to the first team has relegated Marcelo to the bench. Sergio Reguilon has usurped Marcelo as the favored left back for Madrid player. Although  Reguilon isn’t a better player than Marcelo, he is better defensively.

Marcelo has work to do if he is to regain his place at Real Madrid. Nonetheless, he might decide to leave Madrid this summer. Do you think Marcelo should leave Madrid or stay and fight for his spot?
