The Egyptian Football Association has appointed former Al Ahly coach Hossam El Badry as the new head coach.

Hossam El Badry has replaced Javier Aguirre as the new manager of the Egyptian men’s football team, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed.

Mexican coach, Javier Aguirre was dismissed back in July, just hours after Egypt was eliminated by South Africa at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt were the hosts of the tournament and declared as one of the strong favourites to clinch an eighth AFCON title at the start of the continental competition. After a splendid session of matches in the group stages, where they won all their matches and conceded none, the hosts finally fell short. They lost 0-1 to South Africa and couldn’t make it past the last 16 stages.

It was a disappointing tournament for many of the Egyptian fans and a disaster for Egyptian football.

Now, after over two months of rumors and speculation, El Badry has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pharaohs. The former Al Ahly coach beat the experienced Hassan Shehata, Hossam Hassan, Ahmed Hossam Mido, and Ehab Galal to get the position.

Egypt’s FA said in a statement:

“The EFA has made a decision to appoint Hossam El Badry as the new coach for the Egyptian senior team after a meeting on Wednesday,”

El Badry, who was once a footballer, spent his entire career as a footballer at Al-Ahly from 1978 to 1987, before the injury forced him to retire at 26. He also played for the Egyptian national team from 1980 to 1985.

El Badry began his coaching career very early and joined the first team staff in 2002 to serve as a coaching assistant to Al Ahly’s iconic Portuguese manager Manuel Jose.

El Badry became the first Al Ahly player to coach the club in 2009. During his coaching spell with the club, he has won four Egyptian League titles, three Egyptian Cup crowns, Egyptian Super Cup title and 2012 CAF Champions League trophies.

El Badry will be in charge of his first Egypt game in November as the Pharaohs aim to qualify for the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
