Dafasukan brings you our predictions for the 2019 AFCON group stages.
The 2019 Total African Cup of Nations will kick off on the 21st of June, with 24 African teams drawn in six groups for the expanded biennial tournament.
The competition will be packed with action, drama and memorable moments. Many fans are already wondering how the outcome of the tournament will be. Well, to give you a head start, here is our group stage prediction for the AFCON 2019.
GROUP A
The first AFCON group is made up of hosts, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Although Egypt look like clear favorites to top the group, this group isn’t as straightforward as looks. DR Congo are a strong side, but Uganda are very organized and could be the dark horses of the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Winners: Egypt
Runners-up: Uganda
Third place: DR Congo.
GROUP B
This group features two teams that are making their Afcon debuts; Madagascar and Burundi. It also comprises of three time AFCON winners, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria is the clear favorites to top the group, while Madagascar looks like a surprise package.
Winners: Nigeria
Runner-up: Equatorial Guinea
Third place: Madagascar
GROUP C
Senegal, Algeria, Tanzania and Kenya make up group C. Senegal are no just clear favorites to top the group, but also to win the tournament. Algeria boasts of many quality attacking players, while Kenya can cause an upset. Tanzania is clearly the underdogs of the group, but is a very attacking side, and can actually finish as best losers.
Winners: Senegal
Runners-up: Algeria
Third place: Tanzania
GROUP D
Group D is the 2019 AFCON Group of Death, with teams such as Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, and Namibia. It’s a very tricky group, and it’s easy to see why. Morocco has the best players, while Cote d’Ivoire had a solid and complete team. They are the two main favorites to progress, but we think Morocco has the edge over the Elephants of Cote d’Ivore.
Winners: Morocco
Runner-up: Cote d’Ivoire
Third place: South Africa
GROUP E
Many fans are saying that this is the easiest group in the tournament, but that might not be the case. Tunisia, Mali and Angola all topped their respective groups during the 2019 AFCON qualifiers. Mali was undefeated during the qualification and will provide a stern test for Tunisia. Mauritania is also AFCON debutants and has been drawn in this group.
Winners: Mali
Runner-up: Tunisia
Third place: Angola
GROUP F
Group F will see two of the continent’s football giants clash, as Cameroon and Ghana will face each other. Other members of the group include Guinea-Bissau and Benin, both of whom are capable of upsetting Cameroon or Ghana.
Cameroon look like favorites, but Ghana can defeat them to top the group.
Winners: Ghana
Runner-up: Cameroon
Third place: Benin
