Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock concedes his race to add a new striker could last right up until the January transfer window deadline.

Warnock makes no secret of the fact he wants to add a goalscorer to aid Cardiff’s bid for Premier League survival.

Nantes striker Emiliano Sala is one of three signings Cardiff are targeting from France but the manager knows it won’t be easy to conclude business early.

“Clubs and players are always trying to get the best deal. The same clubs are chasing the same players. You’ve got to work hard to try and get signings but the games are also important,” Warnock warned.

“I imagine [it will go down to deadline day], that is the way it is looking at the moment.”

Sala is currently the third top-scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals and it is reported that Nantes are willing to let him go.

Warnock was in France this week but, so far, no deal is agreed. The Bluebirds boss isn’t ruling anything out, or in, for now.

“At the moment it is very up in [the air]. There are a number of players that we are looking at, especially in the French market,” he admitted.

“Nothing concrete at all. Nothing untoward, just have to get on with it with what we’ve got. That’s right [I flew out to France]. I spoke to the owner of the club, they’ve got one or two decent players there as well.

“It’s between us [why it didn’t happen]. I don’t want to go into the details on that. He is one of a number that we looked at, there were two or three players we were looking at, at the same time.

“Anything could happen, I’ve not written anything off. But I’m not optimistic about anything.”

Cardiff are 2.30 to win their relegation six-pointer at home to Huddersfield on Saturday. The Terriers are 3.40 while the draw in South Wales is 3.20.
