Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray says defender Darragh Lenihan will not be rushed back into action as he recovers from his foot injury.

Mowbray’s men found their groove in January and went on a four-match unbeaten run before they travelled to Plymouth last weekend.

A 2-0 defeat saw them drop down to third in the League One table but Mowbray believes there is no need to panic and will not rush key man Lenihan back too quickly.

Lenihan has only made one competitive appearance this season since suffering a fractured metatarsal which required surgery in August.

He played for the Under-23s last week and will remain with Damien Johnson’s side until he improves his fitness.

Confirming his plans, Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Darragh played 60 minutes for the Under-23s, so let’s see how he is this week.

“I’d probably expect him to play one more game for the Under-23s because he’s been out since the opening day of the season. There’s no need to rush him back on the back of that performance.

“You could say that Darragh and Charlie Mulgrew might have been first and second choice in terms of centre-backs, and both haven’t been playing.

It sounds like an excuse, there weren’t any, we have to put it behind us and look forward to the next challenges.”

Lenihan could return to the bench for Saturday’s clash with Oldham, with Blackburn 1.60 favourites. The draw is 3.80, while the Latics are as big as 5.50 to get the job done this weekend.
