Foreign players have always been something local football fans look forward to watch during Sarawak FA matches.

Their presence in the team gives Sarawak the much-needed talent which is severely lacking in the side, hence able to push Sarawak into becoming one of the most feared sides in Malaysia.

In the 90’s, Sarawak were at its pinnacle as a football powerhouse with Sarawak head coach then, Alan Vest,  able to bring Sarawak’s first ever silverware in the Malaysian football scene.

Here are five foreign players that I felt made an impact during the 90s.

JOHN HUNTER

Hunter needs no introduction to fans of Malaysian football.  His ability to strike the ball with power, and his ruthlessness in grabbing goals for Sarawak had earned him several nick names nationwide with the most prominent being ‘John Kerbau Hunter’. If that is not enough as proof, Hunter’s 50 goals from 99 matches is nothing but proof of his ability, which also puts him as Sarawak’s best scoring foreign player up until today.

BILLY BONE

Billy Bone was a key midfielder during the 90s for Sarawak FA.  His ability to intercept the ball and sniff up opportunities up front made him indispensable to the Sarawak side which relied heavily on counter attacks.

NEATHAN GIBSON

Zimbabwe born Gibson came in to replace John Hunter and impressed with 19 goals from his 39 appearances.  The striker was feared most during set pieces and could easily score when crosses are swung in towards him.

DAVID EVANS

Tall defender Allister Edwards is considered a legend in Sarawak and is Sarawak’s longest serving foreign player to date.  He had played over 108 matches with Sarawak and was a manage during set-pieces particularly long throws and corner kicks.

JEFF CURRANS

Currans partnered David Evans in the 90s to add speed to Sarawak defensive capabilities.  When needed, Currans would move up to help attack, but he was key in getting Sarawak gained one of the meanest defences in 1991 – 1992, including winning helping Sarawak win the Piala FA.
