Mesut Ozil

The 2018/2019 Premier League season has seen so many players establish themselves as stars in their clubs.

It has also seen many players who have failed to live up to their billing.

Here are the five flops of the 2018/2019 Premier League season.

1. Mesut Ozil – Arsenal

Ozil has failed to perform to expectations this season. Under Unai Emery, the German international never seemed to get it right. He started 16 of Arsenal’s 31 Premier League games, but if you take a closer look, Ozil has started two away games since September 2018. He also failed to start in so many high profile matches that Arsenal has played.

Mesut Ozil might be the most expensive player at Arsenal, but this season he was one of their worst performers considering his standard.

2. Gary Cahill – Chelsea

Ever since Maurizio Sarri came in charge of Chelsea, many players suffered from his formation and tactics.

Chelsea switched from their three-man defense, which they played with under Conte, to a four-man defense under Sarri. Gary Cahill saw his place at centre back usurped. Since then, his stock has plummeted, and he makes our list of the Premier League flops of the 2018/2019.

3. Adama Traoré – Wolves

Traoré signed for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side for a club record fee of £18m. Many fans expected great things from the 23-year-old dribbling wizard. Nobody will ever doubt the quality of the former Aston Villa man, but he hasn’t really reached the heights expected of him at the Molineux this season.

He played less than 26 times in the league for Wolves this season, albeit predominantly as a substitute.

4. Fred – Manchester United

A lot of Manchester United fans might have forgotten that Fred is still in their team, and you won’t blame them.

A whopping fee of £52m was what United paid to bring in the midfielder from Shakhtar Donetsk. He can’t break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team and is unequivocally a Premier flop this season.

5. Adama Diakhaby – Huddersfield

The 22-year-old winger was bought by Huddersfield for £10m last summer, great things were expected of him,  but unfortunately, Adama Diakhaby has done no such thing.

The Senegalese born French international has played 11 games in the league this season and hasn’t found the back of the net.
