Winston Reid insists West Ham can’t afford to continue making defensive errors when they travel to Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

The Hammers, who are priced at 4.50 to be relegated, welcomed Newcastle on Saturday and made a positive start to the afternoon, with Marko Arnautovic breaking the deadlock after just six minutes.

However, the celebrations were short lived as Henri Saivet, who was making his first league start under Rafael Benitez, levelled four minutes later.

The visitors went on to take control of the clash in the second half with Mo Diame and Christian Atsu both netting to make it 3-1.

Andre Ayew pulled one back for West Ham late on but they couldn’t find any more fortune in front of goal and came away from St James’ Park on the wrong end of a 3-2 result.

West Ham were guilty of committing a series of defensive errors against the Magpies, while they also missed a penalty, and Reid insists they must cut out the mistakes when they head to Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Reid said: “It was terrible, from our point of view, conceding three goals, giving goals away, and they could have had another two in the first half.

“We didn’t do the things that we’d been doing the last couple of weeks and we didn’t take our chances as well, the chances that we had, so it wasn’t good at one end and it wasn’t fantastic at the other.

“Fortunately enough, we have another game on Tuesday, so we’ll go again then.

The games are coming thick and fast now and we need to go to Bournemouth and make sure we pick up some points.”
