Sergio Ramos Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos has been the Captain of Real Madrid since former goalkeeper, Iker Casillas left the team. During his reign as captain, Madrid won a host of major trophies including three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles. But it is time for a change, and Ramos needs to step down as captain. There have also been doubts raised inside the Real Madrid boardroom and the technical team over the future of Sergio Ramos as the Spanish club’s captain.

All this has occurred due to the defender’s actions this season, which has left several board directors unimpressed. Here’s why Ramos needs to step down as Real Madrid captain.

  1. Ramos oversteps his authority

For years, Ramos has acted like an untouchable for both Real Madrid and Spain. He regularly oversteps his authority and takes matters into his own hands. A good example was when he called for the sacking of coaches like Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez. He has been shown even to influence some significant club transfers.

Another instance was when Ramos went public to show his opposition against the appointment of former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte and that many board members shocked.

  1. His recent actions

Recently, Sergio Ramos was caught on camera booting the ball into young teammate Sergio Reguilon during a bout of anger at a Real Madrid training session. The Spain skipper took an accidental elbow jab to the nose from his young teammates and reacted awkwardly.

This has also created a lot of concern among Real Madrid faithful. Even though he went on to apologise, a player who makes rash decisions like that can’t lead a team with so much heritage like Real Madrid.

  1. His poor disciplinary record

Ramos has received more than 280 cards during his footballing career. This is where it gets interesting; The Spanish skipper has picked up more yellow and red cards than any other football player in the history of LaLiga, the Champions League, and even the Spain national team. This season he has amassed three yellows in La Liga and 2 in the Champions League.  His poor disciplinary record makes him unfit to lead the Los Blancos.
