The role of a full-back in a match in modern football has gone beyond defending alone. Full-backs are now involved in offensive role for their clubs and countries.

The football has witnessed some great full-backs like Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Paolo Maldini who were attacking threats to oppositions, yet solid in their defensive duties. Here are the top 5 best wingbacks:

Jordi Alba – Barcelona, Spain

Jordi Alba is arguably the best attacking full-backs in the world presently. The Barcelona man is excellent when it comes to readingthe game. He is solid in defence and an attacking threat. His attacking attributes has helped Barcelona to add to their goal tally. He has a very good pace that makes it easy for him to connect with both ends of the pitch. Alba assisted almost 20 goals for Barcelona last season across all competitions and also got his name on score sheet.

Andrew Robertson – Liverpool, Scotland

Robertson has made Liverpool left-wing his own since moving to the club from Hull City in 2017.The Scotland international was instrumental to Liverpool winning the Champions League and given Manchester City a run in the Premier League. He is strong in his position and does not lose his ground to oppositions. He is unarguably one of the best left-backs in the world. His surge down the left always helps the Red Devils midfield trio. Joshua Kimmich – Bayern Munich, Germany

Kimmich is one of the best in his position both in defence and attack. The German has cemented himself in Bayern Munich first eleven since making his debut four seasons ago under Pep Guardiola. He is calm with the ball at his feet, versatile and it can be said that he has perfectly replaced former Bavarian captain Philip Lahm at the right-back. He has a high pass completion rate and good in keeping possession. He is good at foraying forward and has accrued double figures of assists to himself.

Lucas Hernandez – Bayern Munich, France

Hernandez is a strong left-back with excellent defensive and offensive abilities. He was part of the French team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He was also outstanding for Atletico Madrid last season, winning the Europa League and Super Cup. His performances earned him a €80 million move to Bayern Munich this summer. He is a dogged tackler and averages 2.5 tackle per game.

Dani Carvajal – Real Madrid, Spain

Carvajal is among the best fullback in the world. The Real Madrid right-back is known for his aggressive defending. He provides attacking support for his team, though he is yet to get his name on the score sheet regularly. He has high pace that makes him run the flank to connect with his teammates. He makes an average of 1.5 tackles per game. He has been consistent with his performance.
