Former world number one Tiger Woods feels his game is in good shape heading into the US Open and an improvement in the putting department is all that is needed to challenge for the Major title.

Woods has been enjoying an injury-free run this season after numerous back operations and there have been signs he is getting back to somewhere near his best.

The American, who finished tied-second at the Valspar Championship earlier this year, put on a masterclass of ball-striking at the Memorial Tournament last time out and he was in contention going into the final day.

However, the flat stick was cold throughout the tournament and the 42-year-old’s putting ranking was second-bottom of the players who made the cut as he three-putted five times.

Woods had to settle for a six-way share of 26th on -9, six shots behind champions Bryson DeChambeau, but the 14-time Major champion is feeling positive ahead of the US Open.

“I hit it really good this week, so that’s a positive going into Shinnecock, where ball-striking is going to be a must,” he said.

“And if I just putt normally, I’ll probably be right up there in the last couple of groups.

“If I just keep building on this, with how I’m hitting it right now, I’m in good shape for two weeks from now.

I’ve had little building blocks along the way, and I keep getting a little bit better, a little bit more refined, and you start to see the results.”

The second Major of the year takes place at Shinnecock Hills and Woods is 17.00 to lift the trophy for the fourth time whilst Dustin Johnson is the narrow 11.00 favourite.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is next in the betting at 12.00, just ahead of American Jordan Spieth at 13.00.
