Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow after reported target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic reiterated his desire to remain at Lazio this summer.

Milinkovic-Savic joined the Italian outfit in 2015 from Genk and he has been a regular first-team fixture ever since, making 94 Serie A appearances and scoring 17 goals.

The 23-year-old’s impressive performances were enough to land him a place in Serbia’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and he played in all three group games as his country was eliminated at the first stage.

Several top European clubs have been tracking the midfielder this summer and there have been reports claiming an offer close to 100million euros would be needed to wrap up a deal.

United boss Jose Mourinho is said to be a firm admirer of the Lleida-born star and the Portuguese tactician is believed to be pushing for a move to be completed before the transfer window closes on August 9.

However, it appears Milinkovic-Savic, who has a contract until 2022, will be staying at the Stadio Olimpico for at least another year judging by his recent comments.

When asked about his future by fans outside the facility, he said, as quoted by Goal: “Of course I’m staying, do you not see that I’m here?” Milinkovic-Savic’s comments will come as another blow to the Red Devils manager, who has already expressed his disappointment at the lack of transfer business done at Old Trafford this summer.

Lazio, who finished fifth in Italy last term, are 51.00 to win Serie A this season while defending champions Juventus are the firm 1.44 favourites to retain their crown.
