Patrick Mboma applies to coach Cameroon
September 19, 2019Cameroon legend, Patrick Mboma has indicated his interest in coaching the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
The 48-year-old has applied to replace Clarence Seedorf as head coach of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winners.
Patrick Mboma recently confirmed that he has applied for the position of Cameroon head coach. He also revealed that Algeria’s coach and Africa Cup of Nations-winning manager Djamel Belmadi played an influence in his decision.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are currently without a permanent coach after Dutchman Clarence Seedorf was sacked in July following failure to defend the AFCON title in Egypt.
It would the recalled that Cameroon went the 2019 African Nations Cups as defending champions, qualified from the group stage in second place, and we’re eliminated by Nigeria 3-2 in the round of 16.
Clarence Seedorf and his assistant Patrick Kluivert we’re fired from the position in July and now the job up for grabs. Mboma told local media outlets in Cameroon that he is interested in the job, and has already put in a request for the position.
The former striker has never coached any team before but was involved as a technical staff member of Paris Saint-Germain’s Under-19 side.
Mboma told journalists that Djamel Belmadi convinced him that coaching was not as complicated as it seemed. He said: “The way he told me things were what persuaded me.
“I felt dizzy in my head and spent 24 good hours thinking about it. After much consideration, I decided to discuss it with the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, who welcomed my decision”
“In due time, admittedly discreetly, I decided to apply for the position of coach of the Indomitable Lions.”
Should Mboma bd appointed Cameroon coach, he would be charged with leading the Lions to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after they missed out qualification for the 2018 edition.
He would also be tasked with helping the Central Africans win back the Afcon title they won in 2017.
Patrick Mboma won the AFCON as a player in 2000 and 2002. He scored 33 goals in 57 appearances for Cameroon and played in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
