Ultras are football fans renowned for fanatical support for a team.

The term ‘ultras’ originated in Italy but it is now used worldwide to describe predominantly organized fans of football teams.

Usually ultras tend to use flares, vocal support and banners to highlight their presence during a match.  Their presence is designed to create an atmosphere which encourages their own team and intimidates opposing players and supporters.

In Malaysia, the culture of ultras is much alive and here are the three biggest ultras in Malaysia.

GB13 (Sarawak)

The ultras from Sarawak are known best for their intimidating and encouraging banners during match days.  Despite the dwindle in membership of late, their presence on social media hits over 109,000 followers, making them the third biggest followed ultras group in Malaysia.

Elephant Army (Pahang)

Pahang’s Elephant Army boast of over 201,000 followers on Facebook, making them the third most followed ultras in Malaysia. Their popularity rose with Pahang’s football team and they take pride with their black and white colours during football matches involving Pahang FA.

Boys of Straits (Johor)

Boys of Straits command some 245,000 followers on Facebook alone, and they are well supported by the Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club. They are the second most followed ultras in Malaysia with that figure, and are known to travel in huge numbers on their awaydays.

Ultras Malaya (Malaysia)

While some may say that including Ultras Malaya as the biggest ultras group in Malaysia is not fair since they are supported by almost all ultras group in the country, one can’t deny the fact that they are the most influential group of all.  Their numbers in the Klang Valley alone goes to the thousands and their stand can influence stadium attendance for the Malaysian national team. On social media, there’s several pages owned by Ultras Malaya, with a collective number of followers reaching over 300,000.
