Defending champion Jordan Spieth admits it is a dream come true to be taking on Tiger Woods on the final day of a major as he prepares to try and win back-to-back Open Championships.

Spieth fired a round of 65 on Saturday to move into a three-way tie for the lead at Carnoustie in Scotland.

The American will start his final round alongside countrymen Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele at the top of the leaderboard.

Kevin Chappell sits alone in fourth and two shots behind on seven-under par, while Italy’s Francesco Molinari is in fifth one shot further back.

Tommy Fleetwood, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren, Webb Simpson and Woods are all tied in sixth at -5 but they remain four shots behind the leading trio.

Woods fired his best round at a major since 2011 to move into contention and Spieth admits taking on the former world number one on the final day is something he always dreamed about.

The 24-year-old told reporters: “I’ve always wanted to battle it out with Tiger in a major – who hasn’t? “I think I played it out at Augusta in my head. It’s kind of a dream come true just to have the opportunity.

“I saw he played pretty well. I’m not surprised. He seemed confident walking off the putting green, the little that we talked.

“It’s nice that he’s on point. It’s really good for the sport, obviously, for the extra interest. And the way that he’s striking those two or three irons, he’s certainly going to be in it, which is really exciting for us.”

Spieth remains the 2.88 favourite to win the event, while Woods is priced at 15.00 to surge up the leaderboard and win his fourth Claret Jug.
