Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles insists his team are ready for their relegation fight and are in a better situation than they were two years ago.

The Magpies dropped out of the Premier League during the 2015/16 season and a lot of the fans lost faith with the squad.

The likes of Moussa Sissoko, Gini Wijnaldum and Daryl Janmaat all made it clear they would leave and the club had to rebuild following their relegation.

However, Lascelles insists it is different this time around as he tries to help the club avoid the drop.

He signed a new long-term contract recently and the 25-year-old insists the whole squad is committed to the cause.

Lascelles told The Chronicle: “I think it is a positive to sign a new deal after all the speculation about other clubs.

“The gaffer is the one who brings the players in and has the players he wants here.

It is quite important that the players want to be here. I do think in some of the games it has been fine margins and they could have gone either way.

“As players you are on the pitch – and I’m not making excuses – when there’s stuff going on off the pitch it can have an effect on you.

“Personally speaking I think it is better when everybody comes together. All that bad energy can turn to positive and everybody can get what they want.”

Newcastle are next in action on Monday November 26 and they are priced at 2.70 to beat Burnley. The Clarets are 2.88 to win, with the draw 3.10.
