Al Ain winger Hussein El-Shahat believes Egypt can prove to be a “surprise” package at the 2018 World Cup.

The Pharaohs return to the showpiece international event for the first time in 28 years this summer and their hopes are hanging on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

The Reds forward has bagged 44 goals across in all competitions this term and will be hoping to add to that tally in Russia.

Egypt have been drawn in Group A alongside the host nation, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay and progression to the last 16 certainly looks achievable.

Despite not appearing at the World Cup since 1990, Egypt have lifted the Africa Cup of Nations on four occasions during that period and El-Shahat believes they can do well.

“The Uruguay match is definitely the toughest, and if we succeed in achieving a positive result, either a win or a draw, it will pave our way to qualify for the second round,” El-Shahat told DMC Sports.

“I think Egypt will be the surprise of the World Cup and will make it to the second round.”

The Al Ain man will not be travelling to Russia, having been overlooked by boss Hector Cuper, despite having a hand in 18 goals in 11 games for his club.

However, he insists he accepts Cuper’s decision and is hopeful the national side can play to their full potential.

He added: “Whether they were going to take me or not, I will always respect the decisions of the technical staff.

I am not sad and I hope the team will honor our country and the whole Arab world in the World Cup.”

Egypt are priced at 5.00 to win their opening match on June 15, while the draw is available at 3.60. Uruguay can be backed at 1.75.
