Gabor Gyepes played an important role when he was playing for Sarawak FA in 2014.

However, his impact was almost easily forgotten because in football, only goal getters get famous while defenders are usually treated as unsung heroes despite their brilliance on the pitch.

Brought in by Robert Alberts in December 2013 to beef up Sarawak’s defense, Gyepes was part of Sarawak’s plan to challenge for a title in the Liga Super in 2014.

Gyepes made instant impact playing for Sarawak but failed to avoid Sarawak from a defeat in the opening match of the Liga Super.

His second match for the team proved so much better as he scored the winning goal for Sarawak, giving the Crocs a spot at the next round of the Piala FA then.

Gabor continued to show his strength as a defender by marshalling the defenses of Sarawak to secure six clean sheets in the Liga Super but even that failed to help the Crocs in their fight for the championship as they finished seventh in the league.

The Crocs leaked 31 goals and ended the season with 30 points from 22 matches.

Regardless of Sarawak’s position in the league, Gyepes was one of the players that stole the limelight every time he played.

His ability to defend high balls and clear the ball out of danger was vital in keeping the score line low in every game.

His experience playing for top English clubs like Portsmouth and Cardiff City rubbed on local defenders like Hairol Mokhtar, Ramesh Lai and Ronny Harun who themselves became better defenders with Gyepes guiding them.

Fans of Sarawak also favoured Gyepes’ hardworking mentality which showed during every match, and his good rapport with the fans was nothing short of exemplary.

In 2015 however, Gyepes had a slight injury to his toe before the season started and was released by Sarawak FA.  He brought the case to FIFA and word has it that he won the case.

He later joined local Hungarian side Soroksár SC for a couple of seasons and scored 14 goals with the club before he went into the food business and had since laid low when it comes to football.

Gyepes, today 37 has not played professional football for a while and his updates on social media show he is enjoying life with his family right now.

Despite that however, Sarawak fans still remember Gabor as one of the best defenders the Crocs had every had, and most keep in touch with his well-being until this day.
