Liverpool fans were hopeful that Manchester United will defeat Manchester City to help them seal the Premier League title this season.

However, their hopes started crashing in the 54th minute with Bernardo Silva cutting in from the right to fire in the first goal past David De Gea.

Leroy Sane then sealed victory for City in the 66th minute with a powerful shot from a counter attack to ensure Liverpool’s hopes of lifting the Premier League this season became even more difficult.

While a win by United was already unlikely before the match, many United fans were hopeful that they would be able to beat their rivals regardless if they were helping Liverpool or not to lift the league.

The win-less streak United currently shoulders needed to be removed and getting one over their closest rivals would be the perfect tonic to ensure United’s dressing room moral doesn’t drop even further.

However, after 90 minutes of struggling last night, it was evident that United now has more problems of their own than helping Liverpool win the league and here’s three we could find.

Pep Guardiola thrives at Old Trafford

Guardiola is the first manager to win three consecutive matches against United at Old Trafford. If that fact is not hurtful enough to fans of the Red Devils, try the fact that Manchester City is the most successful visiting opponent at Old Trafford, winning seven matches altogether in the league.  It is bad enough Old Trafford has lost its stature as a fortress for United, but to have their rivals as the most successful opponent just rubs it in.

United’s strikers are firing blanks

United had not scored in the last three matches they had recently played.  They last time they had such a lengthy goal drought was in 2016 under Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal. Statistics show that Manchester United’s defeat last night means the Red Devils had failed to score a goal in open play for 527 minutes.  To make matters worse, United leaked a whopping 50 goals this season, the biggest ever goal against in four decades for the club.

United moving further from Champions League action

It is no secret that United wishes to secure an automatic slot to the European Champions League. The only way they can do that is to secure a top four finish in the Premier League.  The defeat to City last night meant that they risk losing out on the automatic slot to the Champions League and might just eventually lose out entirely if they continue their dismal performances in the Premier League.
