Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has denied that Sunday’s game at home to Burnley is a must-win but is fully aware of its importance.

There were few surprises when Cardiff lost 5-0 at home to champions Manchester City last weekend.

That followed on from defeats at the hands of Chelsea and Arsenal. It leaves the Bluebirds second bottom of the Premier League with just two points from their first six games, the same number as Huddersfield and Newcastle.

Burnley climbed out of the bottom three with their first win of the season, beating Bournemouth 4-0 last weekend.

However, they have struggled early on this campaign and Sunday does represent a realistic chance for City to get their first victory of the season in the league.

Warnock, in a press conference ahead of the game, didn’t downplay its significance.

He said: “I think there’ll be a few more of them in the next few weeks. A few more must-win games. It’s not a must win but it is very important to us.

“The two away games coming up at Tottenham and Liverpool with one home game in between means it’s difficult, but it’s a very difficult period. The importance of the game can’t be put under the carpet.

“Winning your first game is always important that’s why I’ve been so disappointed that we’ve not made the most of our opportunities. But we’ve just got to get on with it. We are a little thin for options.”

Cardiff are 2.50 to win on Sunday with the Clarets 3.00 and the draw 3.10. Warnock also used the press conference to give an injury update.

He said that Lee Peltier is out for two to three months after dislocating his shoulder against Manchester City.

He is set to be replaced by Bruno Ecuele Manga while Aron Gunnarsson is also out but Sol Bamba could return in defence.

Cardiff are 1.30 to be relegated back to the Championship at the end of the season.
