West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Pardew has conceded he failed to pick the correct team following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Baggies failed to get out of the blocks at the Hawthorns and they were punished in the first half. Striker Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring with a header, before Jesse Lingard’s deflected effort bounce past goalkeeper Ben Foster. At half-time, Pardew introduced Gareth Barry into the action in place of Claudio Yacob and the former Aston Villa grabbed a consolation goal.

West Brom could not find an equaliser and they have now gone 15 games without a win but Pardew admits he should have made more changes after the midweek fixture against Liverpool. “In hindsight, the team I picked was not the right team. I should have put some fresh legs in there,” Pardew told Sky Sports. “They did so well at Liverpool, and as a new manager I wanted to show some faith in those players, but I should have maybe made two or three changes.

“We looked leggy, we looked not up to the ball. But in the second half we were a lot better and had a lot more conviction to our play – that was the problem.” Pardew’s men will get the chance to make amends on Saturday when they travel to Stoke City.

Potters boss Mark Hughes is under pressure and Stoke are 2.20 favourites to win, with the draw 3.30, while West Brom are priced at 3.40.
