De Gea extends Manchester United contract until 2023
September 17, 2019Spanish number one David de Gea has pledged his future to Manchester United by signing a new deal and extending his contract until June 2023.
The 28-year-old was going to be out of contract at the end of the 2019/20 season but has chosen to extend his stay with United for at least another four years.
The Spanish goalkeeper, who helped United win the Premier League in his second season at the club in 2012/13 season, had been strongly linked to Real Madrid, Juventus and French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
All doubts over his future have been cleared, and De Gea would now extend his Old Trafford stay to 13 years because there is an option to extend his new deal by a further year to 2024.
The Madrid-born goalkeeper began his career aged 13 when he joined Atlético Madrid and moved through the ranks of academy system at the club before he made his debut for the senior team in 2009. He was a highly promising prospect in his youth and quickly rose to the first team.
With time he became Atlético Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper and assisted his team win both the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2010. The following year, his spectacular performances gained the attention of Manchester United. He joined in June 2011 for £18.9 million, which was a British record prize for a goalkeeper at that time.
Since moving to United in 2011, David de Gea has made over 300 match appearances for them. He has won a Premier League title, one FA Cup title, a League Cup title, three Community Shields and also the UEFA Europa League.
From three straight seasons, the 2013/14 to 2015/16, he was elected as United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, an award presented to the Manchester United fans’ player of the season.
He was the first player in the award’s history to win on three successive occasions and also has been included in four consecutive PFA Team of the Year from 2015 to 2018. In 2018 he was named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI.
De Gea will be hoping to win more trophies with the Red Devils and help them return back to the Champions League next season.
