Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner remains convinced the German champions can defend their crown despite a sluggish start to the season.

The Bavarian giants sit in fifth spot in the Bundesliga, seven points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund after their Der Klassiker defeat to BVB prior to the international break.

Bayern twice took the lead at the Westfalenstadion on Saturday but Dortmund battled back to claim what could be a crucial 3-2 win in the fight for the German title.

Wagner is confident his side will fight back, however, and he says anything less than a seventh consecutive league title this season would have to be viewed as a disappointment. “It’s crazy when you look at the league table.

We are fifth, which can’t be the aspiration of Bayern Munich or us players,” he told Goal.

“We have to win the Bundesliga title this year, anything else would be a disappointment. We have the best team by far, in Germany.

“Of course, Dortmund have played a couple of good games, but in my opinion we are the better team.

“Therefore, every single player needs to have the ambition to become a German champion. To say it’s a rebuilding phase or similar is rubbish. “We have to win the Bundesliga.”

Bayern remain the favourites at 1.85 to win the Bundesliga outright this season, despite the fact they trail Dortmund after 11 games. BVB can be backed at 1.95 and second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach are 41.00.
