Assistant coach, Roberto Moreno was named as Spain’s new head coach after Luis Enrique abruptly resigned.

Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique stepped down from his post as head coach of the Spanish men’s national team this week, and he stated that it was due to personal reasons. Enrique was not present in the sidelines in Spain’s last three matches against Malta, the Faroe Islands and Sweden.

He is replaced by his long-time assistant and friend, Robert Moreno, who will now be Spain’s fourth coach in the last 12 months.

1. Started coaching at a young age

The current Spanish boss has always wanted to be a coach. Unlike many coaches today, Robert Moreno never actually played football. He began coach Hospitalet youth team in the early 2000s, when he was 14.

2. Assistant coach for many years

Robert Moreno spent many years together with Luis Enrique during his times at Roma, Celta, Barcelona, and the Spanish national team. From 2011 to 2019 he has worked as assistant manager under Enrique.

3. He has written a book about football

Robert Moreno is a firm lover of the beautiful game. He is known for he ability to use video analysis and other new technology in pre-match preparation. He is also a meticulous football scout, who is very technical and astute. He wrote a book ​My Recipe of the 4-4-2, which shows how much his knowledge of football is.

4. He is Catalan

Just like Enrique his predecessor, Robert Moreno is Catalan. He was  born in Barcelona in 1977, and studied International Trade at the University of Barcelona. He then went into full time into football coaching.

5. An attack-minded coach

Robert Moreno is similar to his close friend and former boss when it comes to playing styles. Moreno is an attack-minded coach, who loves to dominate his opponent. At the age of 41, he is one of the youngest national team coaches in Spain’s history.

Spain will be hoping that Robert Moreno brings back the spark that has left the team.
